1 Installation and Setup

1.1 Compilation

See the INSTALL file in the root directory of the source distribution for instructions on compiling and installing Osmo.

1.2 Gaim Configuration

In the Gaim buddy list, choose “Preferences” under the “Tools” menu. Choose the “Plugins” page in the Preferences dialog. Make sure that there is a checkbox beside the entry for Osmo. If there is no entry for Osmo, then the plugin is not installed in the right location. Change the installation location in the plugin’s Makefile and try again.

Once the box beside Osmo is checked, a choice should appear on the left side of the Preferences window for Osmo. The boxes are filled with default values that should work. The osmo-lyx path is the path to the lyx-osmo executable. This should be an honest-to-God path with no shell variables or quotes or escapes. Spaces may appear in the path, but do not quote it! It is not possible to configure command line arguments to Osmo-LY X. The user directory is where Osmo-LY X will store its configuration information, and follows the same rules as the osmo-lyx path. If this directory does not exist, Osmo-LY X will ask to create it.

1.3 Osmo-LY X Configuration

Osmo-LY X needs no configuration.

2 Using Osmo

2.1 Sending Math

To send math to a buddy, that buddy does not have to have Osmo on his computer. The sender has to have Osmo, however.

To send math to a buddy, you must be directly connected to that buddy, since the math is sent as an image. To direct connect, right click on their name in your Buddy List, and chose “Direct IM.” If this connection is not made, it will be impossible for you to send math.

Once the direct connection is established, you may send math to a buddy by clicking the “Math” button in your conversation window. This will launch Osmo-LY X to take the math input.

2.2 Using Osmo-LY X

2.2.1 Math Mode

Math input in Osmo-LY X should be done in math mode. You can tell if you’re in math mode by the little red box around what you’re typing. Osmo-LY X starts up in math mode, and pressing the buttons on the toolbar should put you into math mode. Also, the leftmost button on the toolbar will put you in math mode. Pressing space bar will exit you from math mode (you can insert spaces by exiting math mode, or by using the Math Panel, see below).

2.2.2 Math Panel

If you want to insert some kind of math notation that is not on the toolbar, try clicking the second button from the left. This will pop up the “Math Panel” which has buttons for many things, including functions, and special characters (like , ⁄=, Ψ, and ⇐⇒). To insert a space without exiting math mode, use the second button from the left on the top of the math panel.

2.2.3 Finishing Up

When you’re done, click the “Insert Math” button on the bottom of your screen. This will render your math into a picture and insert it into the input box in your conversation. You can then send the picture by pressing enter or the send button.
